1. Find Your Air Leaks
Check windows and doorframes for any leakage that might be raising your heating and cooling cost – carefully examine weather stripping if you suspect a leak. 2. Check Your Heating & Cooling Equipment
Take a look at your furnace filters to see if they need changing. Be sure that all the supply vents are open in every room and doors are open to rooms without return air vents, maximizing airflow and circulation. Notice some dust accumulation around your vents? Dust around supply vents can be an indication of dirty filters and/or leaks in your ductwork that are pulling in hot/cold, dusty and allergen filled attic air. 3. Don’t Forget Lighting
Sure, it only accounts for around 10% of your energy bill, but that makes lighting an easy, almost painless, way to make your home more efficient. CFLs and LEDs are more efficient, energy-saving alternatives to the standard incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs can last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs and three times longer than CFLs.
