Did you know that here in North Texas 60% to 70% of your monthly utility bill is the result of Heating and Air Conditioning your home?

No matter what time of year, whether it’s January or July, your heating and air conditioning costs make up the majority of your electric and natural gas bills. Particularly here in North Texas, where it’s not uncommon for the summer temperatures to climb into triple digits and the winter months to see snow and ice, heating and AC costs can be killer especially if you heat with electricity.

Don’t you owe it to yourself and your wallet to make sure that your home and HVAC systems are operating as effectively and efficiently as possible?

Lucky for you, Efficient Home Solutions is happy to offer our customers Free Building and Home Energy Efficiency Audits. Our experienced Energy Auditors have been trained, tested and certified to BPI’s and HERS nationally recognized standards – using the building/house-as-a-system approach to improve the performance of existing structures.

While you can schedule your appointment here, there are a few steps you can take in the meantime to get your home on the energy efficient track. These Do-It-Yourself Home Energy Audit Tips won’t save you as much money as EHS’s Energy Auditors will, but it’s a good place to start!

1. Find Your Air Leaks
Check windows and doorframes for any leakage that might be raising your heating and cooling cost – carefully examine weather stripping if you suspect a leak. The Daily Green suggests closely examining corners, pipes, attic, basement wa//www.thedailygreen.com/green-homes/latest/DIY-home-energy-audit#ixzz2Q0Qec55Tlls and other areas where two different building materials meet.  Example: On an outside doors white frame you will notice a dark dirt or dust line on the frame where your HVAC system is pulling in outdoor air between the weather stripping and the door where they are not making good contact.

2. Check Your Heating & Cooling Equipment
Take a look at your furnace filters to see if they need changing. Be sure that all the supply vents are open in every room and doors are open to rooms without return air vents, maximizing airflow and circulation. Notice some dust accumulation around your vents? Dust around supply vents can be an indication of dirty filters and/or leaks in your ductwork that are pulling in hot/cold, dusty and allergen filled attic air. Leaky ductwork affects your systems energy efficiency, indoor air quality and longevity. Read more about EHS’s duct sealing services.

3. Don’t Forget Lighting
Sure, it only accounts for around 10% of your energy bill, but that makes lighting an easy, almost painless, way to make your home more efficient. CFLs and LEDs are more efficient, energy-saving alternatives to the standard incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs can last up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs and three times longer than CFLs.
